Oil painting on oval canvas mounted on wood panel, of “Ecce Homo,” c. 1867-1869, painted by Sister Bartholomew Nooning (1849-1915). Artist's signature at bottom of painting, "Painted by Sister M. Bartholomew Nooning / [illegible] [art pupil of Mother M. Isabella?] / 186[7]-69".
Sr. Bartholomew was an art pupil of Mother Isabella Clark (1800-1875). Mother Isabella was an artist and twice elected as major superior: 1824-26 and 1838-42. It was during her administration that the Sisters moved from St. Charles, KY, to St. Stephen’s Farm, the present Loretto Motherhouse.
