Oil painting on oval canvas mounted on wood panel, of “Our Sorrowful Mother,” painted my Sister Bartholomew Nooning c. 1867-1869. Artist's signature on Mary's right-hand sleeve, largely illegible from fading.
Sister Bartholomew Nooning (1849-1915) taught at St. Vincent’s, Cape Girardeau, MO; St. Mary’s Academy, Denver, CO; St. Ann’s Academy, St. Paul, KS; and was at Loretto Heights from 1896 until her death. While at the Heights, she served as postmistress 1896-1915. Pictures of Our Sorrowful Mother and Suffering Jesus were part of the decorations of every Loretto school and convent c. 1890-1940.
