Title

antependium

Description

Antependium used at Loretto Heights College, made by students at the Embroidery School in HanYang, China. An antependium was used to decorate the front of an altar. This one has a bat design in shades of blue and gold on a cream background. Brown linen(?) backing. A note written on the original packing box indicated that a five-bat design symbolizes immortality. It was used at Loretto Heights College and given to the Museum by Sr. Dorothy Jane Van Hoogstrate (1924-1995), who taught at Loretto Heights from 1962 until the college closed in 1988, serving for a time as the chair and coordinator of the History Department.
