crucifix

Description

Green-glazed ceramic crucifix, made from design mold made by Sr. Jeanne Dueber, SL, for Novices’ rooms at Loretto Education Center, Denver, CO. Each room had a matching set of holy water font and crucifix in various colors. In the late 1950s when there were large numbers of young women entering religious communities, it was decided to build a new, second Novitiate and House of Studies in the western part of the country for the provinces in that area. Loretto Education Center functioned for a relatively short time as a Novitiate but housed Havern School and remains as a center for retired sisters and a Spirituality Center. Sr. Jeanne Dueber (1937-) is a widely recognized sculptor and has many pieces around the area. She has a gallery of her works as well as her studio at the Loretto Motherhouse and continues to produce new works at this time (2006).
