Description
Collage of early 19th-century Loretto Academy work. At top is a charcoal sketch of Clement Spalding, drawn by his sister, Caroline Spalding (McAtee) when she was a student at St. Mary’s of the Rolling Fork, Calvary, KY. At the bottom left is a sample of beadwork also done at Calvary Academy by Caroline Spalding (McAtee). A newspaper advertisement for portraits (similar to that of Clement Spalding) indicates that one method of fundraising for the Loretto Academies of the early 19th century was for parents of the pupils to have a portrait drawn, $25 without a frame, $30 with a frame. The advertisement, signed by Fr. G.I. Chabrat, Ecclesiastical Superior of the Sisters of Loretto, is dated March 1, 1832.

Their other half-siblings included Anastasia or Ann Constantia Spalding (former Sister of Loretto) and Julia Spalding (Sr. Perpetua Spalding, SL).
