Sampler, tan background with black, gold, green, blue, and red script, five sets of the alphabet, separated with lines of decorative motifs. Signed at bottom "Victoria Whitehair Osage Mission / 1859."
According to the 1857 "Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs," M.C. Victoria Whitehair (transcribed as "H.C." in printed report) entered the school in 1852, and she was 10 years old in August 1857. She may be the "Mary Victory Cecile White Hair" born to Chief George White Hair and baptized by Father J.J. Bax, SJ, at 14 days old on January 2, 1848.
