Description
Hair made into a bouquet of tiny flowers; framed in oval-shaped wood and glass frame. Written on back: “Hair of Bp Flaget to Loretto 1925"; "From Mrs. Josephine E Maryman, nee Villier." Father Flaget arrived in Baltimore, MD, at the end of March 1792 and two months later was assigned to the Mission in Vincennes, IN, where he labored until 1795. Keeping a swatch of hair of the deceased was an early tradition.
Letter from Josephine E. Villier Maryman (Mobile, AL), dated July 25, 1917, donates a "miniature hair souvenir" and rosary of Bishop Flaget to St. Benedict's Academy (Louisville, KY) with the "request, of them, that they will always keep [these relics]...in that institution." See object file.
