Description

Lap desk shaped as a box, wood with brass edges, collapsible handles, hinges, and lock; green fabric on bottom. Two-part hinged writing surface lined with green fabric and covering compartment with two inside drawers. Three compartments, one with lid, next to writing surface. Ivory keyhole on writing surface lid and ivory handle on compartment lid. Wooden box lid has a metal plate engraved "Rev'd C. Nerinckx." Father Nerinckx’s box desk could be carried by hand or on horseback. It has brass handles where a strap could go through. It is thought that Brother Charles Gilbert, a Belgian craftsman and helper of the Sisters of Loretto, made this desk.
