Description

Map C, “'Holy' Land of Kentucky." The “Holy Land” refers to what is now Marion, Washington, and Nelson Counties. These counties held Catholics from Maryland as early as 1785. The beginnings of the Sisters of Loretto, April 1812; the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, December 1812; and the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine’s were all in this area. The first attempt here at religious community, an unsuccessful effort by the Trappists to locate in the area, was in 1804. Their successful foundation, Gethsemani, began in 1848. The Dominican priests, in the person of Reverend Edward Fenwick, came to Kentucky in 1806 and established St. Rose Priory, Church, Monastery.
