painting - watercolor
Description
Watercolor painting of a pink rose and two pink buds on a green thorny stem with leaves. Made by Sr. Teresa Augusta McSoarley, SL (c. 1808 or 1810-1864). Inscribed in pencil on back, "One of my first pieces of painting / T.A."
Sr. Teresa Augusta was born in Baltimore, MD, with the birth name Mary Ann McSoarley. With her two elder sisters, she joined the group of about half a dozen girls and young women who traveled from the East Coast to Kentucky with Fr. Nerinckx in 1822. Due to her young age, she was a student at Little Loretto for several years until she could officially join the Loretto Novitiate. We do not have a full record of her assignments as a Sister, but she was assigned to Bethlehem Academy in Perry County, MO, in 1836, and her correspondence places her at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ste. Genevieve, MO, between 1842 and 1857. She passed away at the Motherhouse in August 1864.
