keffiyeh
Dublin Core
Title
keffiyeh
Description
Cotton fabric keffiyeh headdress scarf, white with woven and embroidered red patterns. Fringe on all sides.
From donor Theresa Kubasak, CoL: "Traditional Arab headdress, now often seen as a symbol of Palestinian rights, but worn in Syria and throughout Arab lands for warmth in winter months and through the rest of the year for protection from the sun's heat. Usually made of cotton (sometimes with wool also) and embroidered with traditional patterns and borders in red or black. [...] In Syria the keffiyeh is seen on the streets every day and some shops on Straight Street sell only keffiyehs. Sometimes in church on Sunday one or several men would be wearing a keffiyeh."
