Description

Hand-carved figure of Kokopelli, a legendary humpbacked flute player or trickster of the Hopi Indians. Kokopelli is also known as the Minstrel, the spirit of music. He is considered a symbol of fertility who brought well-being to the people, assuring success in hunting, planting and growing crops, and human conception. The figurine is signed and dated on the bottom.

This figure was carved by Sr. Joan Van Leeuwen, SL (1933-2010), who entered the Sisters of Loretto in 1961 and served as procurator, bookkeeper, plant supervisor, and maintenance and farm overseer at Loretto Motherhouse. She also served as maintenance coordinator fro St. Mary’s Academy in Englewood, CO. She also worked at Hospice for Peace, Denver, CO as companion, nurse aide, and volunteer. She took up wood carving as a hobby.
