Description

Oval silver napkin ring, engraved “Rev. J. J. Abell” on one side and “Father” on other. Rev. Abell was the chaplain of Bethlehem Academy 1892-1920 and was also pastor of St. Clare’s, Colesburg, KY. The original wood church at St. Clare’s was built by Father Nerinckx. Quotes from Father Nerinckx’s letters: “as of June 27 (1808), church of St. Clare was finished up to the roof,” “intended to build a steeple in hope of getting a bell” and “congregation was comprised of seventeen families.”

This item was presented by Sr. Robert Leona Edelen, SL (1913-2010), a native Kentuckian who attended Bethlehem Academy, entered the Sisters of Loretto in 1931, and served as a teacher in many Loretto schools until her retirement at the Motherhouse in 1986. Sister celebrated 75 years as a Sister of Loretto in April 2006.
