vestment - chalice veil

Chalice veil, cream-colored satin background with maltese cross in center and multicolored gemstone decorations. Red velvet decorative rosettes and edges. Needlework in gold thread. Fuchsia-colored lining.

This vestment set belonged to Archbishop J.B. Lamy of Santa Fe, NM. It was given to Mother Rosine Green (1852-1933), who served as a Council member; the first post mistress; and Superior at many houses, including Las Cruces and Santa Fe, NM. The ornaments were given to the Jesuits in Paris by a lady of the Bourbons of France. Fr. Thomasine, SJ, brought the vestment to New Mexico in 1870 and donated it to the Archbishop. Embroidered, jewelled, and spangled by hand. It was relined and the jewels secured in February 1947 by Sr. Adolpha Cecil, SL (1880-1960), who was sacristan at the Motherhouse 1909-1955 and continued to make and repair vestments and altar linens. Archbishop J.A. Floersh wore the vestment when consecrating the new chapel marble altar at the Motherhouse, March 6, 1946.
