Description

Hair flower arrangement presented by Mrs. Jane P. Spalding Blincoe, 1918. It also includes the names of the Loretto Convent, Marion County, KY, May 1868 and the names of the pupils of the Academy (handwritten on paper attached to the back; printed on paper attached to the front). Mrs. Blincoe is number 5 on the list. It was the custom at that time to use human hair in fancy work. Each of the flowers has a number identifying the person who contributed her hair. Flowers are arranged with metal and beads as well as a ribbon bow, and attached to an octagonal piece of cardboard.

12. Mother Bertha Bowles (1813-1896), entered in 1828, Superior General 1864-1870. She was said to be majestic in height, had a stately presence, and was gentle in manner. Plans for a new Academy Building were begun during her tenure, not completed until 1886.
13. Mother Bridget Spalding (1810-1871) She entered in 1824 and was Superior General 1852-1858).
14. Sister Isabella Clarke (1799-1875) She entered August 4, 1815, was Superior General 1824-1826 and 1838-42. During her tenure, foundations were established in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri. She was a skilled artist.
15. Sister Rosalia Clarke (1802-1870) who entered November 1,1816, was a classroom teacher who “kept abreast with the times in educational matters.”
16. Sister Elanora (Eleanora) Clarke (1803-1882). She entered December 25, 1817, was founding superior at Florissant, Missouri (1847-1861), and Edina, Missouri (1865-1874). (14, 15, and 16 were blood sisters, all born near Holy Cross Church, Marion County, KY, all entered Loretto School at its incipiery and later entered the Novitiate as soon as their age permitted.)
17. Sister Louisa Philips (1802-1874), who entered August 22, 1815.
18. Sister Perpetua Spalding (1804-1859), who entered Oct. 2, 1818. Her brother was Archbishop Martin John Spalding.
19. Sister Generose Mattingly (1807-1899). She entered June 13, 1824 and was the last Sister to receive the veil from Father Nerinckx. She was Superior General 1842-1844 and the first Sister of Loretto to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, June 8, 1899.
20. Sister Euphemia Mud(d) (1801-1873). She entered May 30, 1819. 21. Sister Berlindes Downs (1812-1885). She entered in 1828, served as Superior General three times (1844-46, 1846-52, 1858-64). During her administration the sisters pioneered to Santa Fe in 1852 and the Motherhouse church and convent burned to the ground in February 1858. She supervised the rebuilding and the church was consecrated in 1863. She also served many years as Mistress of Novices.
22. Sister Eugene Brosius (1809-1886) entered December 25, 1823. “When the convent at Loretto burned Feb 20, 1858, she was an invalid in bed in the infirmary. They took her out, quickly, mattress and all in blankets, put her down in the snow while they worked at saving all they could, still went on.”
23. Sister Clara Casody (Clare Cassidy) (1807-1887) She entered August 15, 1824 and was procurator at Loretto, Kentucky, 1865-68.
24. Sister Angela Green (1811-1882). She entered May 15, 1828, was First Superior at Cedar Grove, Kentucky in 1842, where she taught art and music.
25. Sister Angelica Hayden (1818-1890) entered Nov. 27, 1832, and was in charge of the department of music at Cedar Grove Academy.
26. Sister Susana Holden (1807-1891) entered August 15, 1822, and “lived a faithful worthy religious life until her death.”
27. Sister Regina Holden (1811-1871) entered July 2, 1818. She was a six year old orphan taken in by Loretto sisters in 1817. She was a music teacher and served as Mistress of Novices. “When helpless from infirmity she was wheeled into the choir from the infirmary, where her birdlike voice, not trammeled by pain, sang the praise of God.”
28. Sister Barbara Montgomery (1807-1880) entered April 15, 1827.
29. Sister Apalona (Appolonia) Wathen (1795-1858 entered December 25, 1821 and died at Calvary, Kentucky.
30. Sister Alexandrina (e) Hardestry (1806-1871) entered May 15, 1828, was missioned at St. Mary’s College prior to 1859.
31. Sister Sophia Thompson (1818-1883) entered September 8, 1832 and had a sister who also entered Loretto: Sister Scholastica (1800-1861).
