Description
Set of papers found in bottles in the walls of St. Ann's Academy and Convent, Osage Mission (St. Paul), KS, as the buildings were salvaged in 1900. Notes found in the bottles indicate they were placed in the walls in the summer of 1880 to bless or protect the building (see object file for more detail).
a) Scrap of paper with handwriting, transcribed as "Deposited in this building on the 12 of May, 1880, under the protection of our Sorrowful Mother, the ever-blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, St. Ann, St. Ignatius, St. Dominick, St. Vincent, St. Rock, St. Philomena and St. Julianna. Under the reign of Pope Leo 13th, the Presidency of Mr. R.B. Hayes, and the conventual administration of Mother Bridget Hayden."
b) Printed advertisement for St. Ann's Academy, Osage Mission, KS, listing tuition and fees as well as "Special Regulations." Reverse has handwritten note dated July 18, 1880, transcribed as "I, Sister Mary Bridget do consecrate myself and all that I have charge of - especially this new House - to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. St. Ann and St. Ignatius, pray for us! St. Joseph, still protect and watch over my temporal and spiritual concerns. / Sister M. Bridget Hayden, Superior of St. Ann's Academy, Osage Mission, Kansas, July 18 1880. Amen."
c) Fragment of August 1873 printed prayer to the Sacred Heart, marked as from Loretto.
d) Page printed by "Our Young Folk's Magazine," Boston, MA, with an image of Pope Pius IX and text "tu es Petrus / Where Peter is, there is the Church" on the front and a prayer on the back.
e) Printed holy card depicting Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, printed in France, with prayer in French on back.
f) Printed holy card depicting St. Ignatius, printed in Germany, inscribed on back in pencil "Sister, Sometimes remember and pray for your pet, Annie Morris."
g) Fragment of holy card depicting Christ Sacred Heart, with prayer in French on back.
