Description

Watercolor painting on paper of the urn from Father Charles Nerinckx's original grave at the Loretto Motherhouse, with red, blue, and yellow flowers. Signed "Loretto" in the bottom right corner. Typewritten text taped to the painting describes the tomb built at the Motherhouse in 1833 (when Nerinckx's remains were moved there from Missouri) and how this painting was found.

"For a Memorial of It / In August, 1941, our Lorettines of the Lebanon, Ky. School [St. Augustine] -- Sister Bernard Marie being Superior, and His Excellency, Most Reverend John A. Floersh, D.D., the Metropolitan of the Archdiocese -- unframed a picture one of those long hanging on their walls, and beneath the unframed picture, the Sisters found this painting which represents the Urn that surmounted the original tomb of dear Father Nerinckx."

"In 1833, a writer in the 'Catholic Telegraph' Vol. 3, p. 10, gives an account of the life of Father Nerinckx, and of a visit to his tomb at Loretto. His description of the tomb is quoted by M.J. Spalding, D.D., in his 'Sketches of Kentucky,' Edition of 1844--pp. 213-214: 'It is built with brick, covered with a plain oak plank, painted and sanded in imitation of stone, and surmounted by a large urn...' Rt. Reverend M.J. Spalding, D.D., was Bishop of Louisville 1850-1864."
