dipper - gourd

Dublin Core

Title

dipper - gourd

Description

Gourd dipper, painted with black designs and gye nyame symbol. "Gye nyame / except God" written on inside. Sr. Marie Ego, SL, brought this object back from Ghana. She said gourds are used there to dip water, and the gye nyame symbol is found on many everyday objects and places. She explained that there are multiple ways to describe the meaning of the symbol. The phrase "except God" puts God in a position of power; her favorite way to describe the meaning, however, is "God is sufficient for me."
