Description

Altar, three levels, 38 ½”, 45 ½”, 52” high, tabernacle 21” x 32” x 12” deep, reredos, back of altar, 9’ high, 7’5” wide 42” deep, made for Holy Mary’s, Calvary, KY. Letter of Father Nerinckx, August 18, 1807: “I just came from Holy Mary’s where after being much thwarted, I have finally succeeded in making the contact for an altar which is to cost $160, part of which I defray myself. Made by my own design, it will be inlaid with different kinds of wood…the beautiful crucifix [#0004] from the chisel of Laurent of Mechlin will be quite an ornament to the altar." Letter of Fr. Nerinckx, Pentecost Week, 1808: “Two weeks ago, I sang the first High Mass at the new altar at Holy Mary’s.” Listed in the May 1964 Motherhouse inventory. Altar stone not original - added when the altar was moved to St. Dominic's Church.
