Description

Copy of “Little Loretto" in black wood frame. This is a copy of an etching by Courtois of Malines (likely Jean Pierre Alexandre Courtois), which was made in Europe from a description of the original site of the Sisters of Loretto in St. Charles, KY. This copy is titled "Old Loretto (engraved in Belgium, 1816)." The buildings identified are:
1. Father Nerinckx Cabin, his living quarters.
2. Father Nerinckx refectory and guest house.
3. Infirmary and guest house for Sisters and students.
4. Servants’ quarters.
5. Sisters’ and children’s kitchen and refectory.
6. Chapel and convent.
7. School
The print improves on nature, adding trees not native to Kentucky, as the artist did not know what frontier America looked like. The cabins are surrounded by a rail fence and centered on a courtyard with a crucifixion scene and veiled young Sisters praying under angelic banners inscribed “O Suffering Jesus” and “O Sorrowful Mary.”
